Most Tattooed Cities in America
The Today Show on NBC recently released a list of the top 10 most tattooed cities. How did they decide which cities were in fact the most tattooed? Basically it all boils down to how many tattoo shops per capita are located in the city. They also took into consideration the cities that host tattoo conventions. So which cities made the list?
Los Angeles, California starts the countdown at number 10.
With all of the tattooed celebrities and the home of the famous L.A. Ink, it’s no wonder that Los Angeles made the list. Number 9 goes to Kansas City, Missouri.
Kansas City’s “tattoo friendly” environment is attributed to its many colleges, large performing arts scene, and the flourishing number of residents under 30. The tattoo shop per capita in Kansas City is 6 per 100,000.
The number 8 slot belongs to Honolulu, Hawaii.
Honolulu boasts 6.5 tattoo shops per 100,000 people. Well with the lovely weather year round, who wouldn’t want to show off new ink every so often?

Continuing on down to number 7 we find San Francisco, California.
The Bay Area has 7 tattoo shops per 100,000 people. The city was mentioned in Matador Nights’ “Five Destinations for the Tattooed Traveler.” This is credited to the reputation of San Francisco as being a “’haven’ for tattoo lovers in the 60’s.”
Coming in at number 6 is Austin, Texas.
Known for its live music scene, “artsy” folk, and college town feel, Austin has about 7.5 tattoo shops per 100,000 people. The fact that the majority of Austin’s population is between the ages of 25 and 44 helps add to the tattooed lifestyle.
Halfway down the list we find Portland, Oregon.
Portland is called home by a lot of 25 to 44 year olds. Most of them are music loving, artsy folk who apparently love tattoos. Twelve tattoo shops per capita is what put this city on the list.
The number four slot is claimed by Flint, Michigan.
The cities predominately young population is reason enough to have a high tattoo shop per capita ratio. NBC did not mention what that exact number was, however.
Sitting back at number 3 is Richmond, Virginia.
NBC calls this city the most surprising on the list. The arts and college population no doubt add to the tattoo friendliness of Richmond. Also there are numerous tattoo shops located in the various suburbs of the city as well. Such tattoo shops may have contacted experts similar to the best llc service in west virginia for their businesses to remain operational. Within the city limits of Richmond the shop per capita ratio is 14.5 to 100,000. However in the small suburb of Colonial Heights, 5 tattoo shops can be found for just 17,000 residents.
The runner-up in this most tattooed city competition is Las Vegas, Nevada.
“What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas … and on your body forever.” The average population of Las Vegas belongs to those between the ages of 25 and 44, the age of most people getting tattooed. Las Vegas, host to one of the largest tattoo conventions in the country, has just over 16 tattoo shops per 100,000 people.
And the number 1 most tattooed city goes to…Miami Beach, Florida.
Home of TLC’s “Miami Ink,” Miami Beach boasts about 24 tattoo shops per 100,000 people! Again, though, with lovely weather nearly all year who wouldn’t want to show off some beautiful body art while soaking up the sun on a fabulous beach.
